"Global waste is tied closely with neoliberal capitalist consumption"

News: Apr 19, 2017

Three questions for Myra Hird, who will visit the Environmental Humanities Network on April 27th and speak about waste management.

What is the largest problem with waste today?
I see two fundamental problems with waste today. Firstly, our global waste is tied very closely with neoliberal capitalist consumption, and it is difficult to see meaningfully dealing with waste without also dealing with our system of extraction, production, and circulation. The second issue is that, generally, people are far more focused on municipal solid (and to a lesser extent liquid) waste than they are about the much more prolific and contaminating issue of industrial and military waste.

What can we do about this on a societal level?
'We' (meaning people in the globalised north) can focus on the circuits of capitalism and their myriad relationships with waste. We can also both educate ourselves, and collectively press for change.

How can I as a regular person affect this development?
By educating ourselves beyond our own production of waste, and working collectively with others towards public action.
