Maintenance Matters. Exploring common contexts of Heritage (e)valuation

The purpose of the project is to explore enduring values and meanings found within common contexts of ‘maintenance and repair’ (craftsmanship; built heritage designation; one optional) in an urban setting. These contexts are considered as core heritage phenomena that enable for ‘the past’ to endure and remain in our contemporary modern world. Seen in this way, these contexts are also bearers and upholders of endurance and socio-material cohesion, an ‘urban glue’, why such contexts may amount to a resource in the face of the anthropocene. Several contexts of this kind will be scrutinized in close up studies of their socio-spatial practices of (e)valuation. The aim is to: 1) identify the core sets of values and meanings of maintenance and repair and their interplay, 2) evaluate the contribution of the core values in their material entanglement, in meeting global challenges of sustainability and the survival of the earth, 3) develop an understanding of the relationship of the common contexts of buildings-as-heritage, to ‘maintenance and repair’ in terms of ethics.
