The ethics of risk and precaution

Conducted by Christian Munthe (professor of practical philosophy), this theme regards basic as well as applied issues with regard to how individuals and societies should handle large-scale or otherwise drastic risks, uncertainties and knowledge gaps, especially regarding science, technology and the natural environment. In 2011, Munthe published the book The Price of Precaution and the Ethics of Risk (Springer), followed by a number of international academic encyclopedia and review essays, as well as the recent original research article ”The Black Hole Challenge: Precaution, Existential Risk, and the Problem of Knowledge Gaps” (Ethics, Policy & the Environment, in press). Munthe’s expertise in the field has been acknowledged through commissioned reports for the Swedish Board of Agriculture, and membership of the Swedish Gene Technology Advisory Board. In 2016-2017, Munthe was commissioned by the Swiss federal government to provide a report on the ethics of regulating new biotechnology in the non-human domain.
